China's deepest geothermal scientific exploration well has been officially completed
On November 6th, it was learned from the press office of Sinopec that the first deep geothermal scientific exploration well over 5,000 meters in China, Fushen Thermal Well 1, which was deployed and implemented by Sinopec, was officially completed and entered a new stage of development and utilization. This marks a breakthrough in the exploration of deep geothermal resources in South China It is of great significance for further exploring and forming a technical route for high-temperature geothermal power generation, cooling and comprehensive utilization suitable for the southern regions of our country, and for facilitating the green and low-carbon transformation of regional energy.

Fushen Thermal Well 1 is located in Haikou City, Hainan Province. It is a supporting project of the National Key Research and Development Program project "Research on Key Technologies for Deep Geothermal Resources Exploration and Evaluation", aiming to reveal the formation and enrichment mechanism of regional deep geothermal resources, explore the potential of deep high-temperature geothermal resources, and verify key technologies for exploration and evaluation. In April this year, the well was successfully drilled, reaching a depth of 5,200 meters, setting a new record for the deepest geothermal scientific exploration well in China and even Asia. Researchers have discovered high-temperature geothermal resources with temperatures exceeding 188℃ in granite dating back 250 million years at a depth of 4,615 to 5,200 meters underground. Subsequently, Sinopec carried out fracturing operations on the well, and all data indicators were good. It achieved the goal of breaking the rock, injecting cold water, and extracting heat, forming the exploration and evaluation technology for deep geothermal resources in South China, and successfully completed the research task.
Guo Xusheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the chief geologist of Sinopec, introduced that the geological conditions in South China are complex and the law of resource enrichment is not clear. Fushen Thermal 1 well is the first discovery well in China to conduct 5,000-meter deep geothermal resource exploration in this region. Facing unfamiliar objects and fields, all participating construction units worked closely together, overcoming one difficulty after another in geological understanding, engineering technology and project management, and achieved fruitful results. Next, Sinopec will continue to build it into an integrated R&D platform and demonstration base for research, education, production and application of high-temperature geothermal resources in South China, explore more application scenarios of geothermal resources, and promote greater progress in the theory and technology of high-temperature geothermal exploration and development in southern China and even the whole country.

Sinopec has been continuously delving into the geothermal field and has become the largest domestic enterprise in the development and utilization of geothermal energy. At present, the development and utilization of geothermal resources in China mainly focus on shallow and medium-deep hydrothermal geothermal resources, while the development of deep geothermal resources buried below 3,000 meters, especially dry hot rock resources, is still in the exploratory stage. Sinopec has been deeply engaged in the geothermal field, with a cumulative geothermal heating capacity of over 100 million square meters. It has also completed multiple regional geothermal heating projects with a scale of several million square meters. It has innovatively formed the basic theory of the formation mechanism of geothermal systems and overcome a number of key core technologies such as resource and area selection evaluation technology and "heat extraction without water consumption" engineering technology. And successfully held the 2023 World Geothermal Congress.
