It is the right time for the BDO industry to rise from the ashes
On August 9th, the second BDO Industry Chain Innovation and Derivatives Industry Conference and GBL Industry Development Exchange Conference were held in Yinchuan. Experts attending the meeting pointed out that although the 1, 4-butanediol (BDO) industry is currently in a painful period of falling product prices and enterprises facing significant operational pressure, it is also an opportunity period for the industry and enterprises to break through development bottlenecks and achieve rebirth. The BDO industry should pay more attention to innovation and research and development as well as the exploration of new application fields.

Wang Yong, the deputy general manager of China Chemical Industry News Co., LTD., said that with the advancement of economic integration and integrated development, new energy, spandex, BDO and their upstream and downstream industries have developed rapidly, and related industries have formed a major trend of transferring and aggregating to the resource-intensive and element-rich western regions. In 2024, the degree of integration of BDO is continuously deepening, which helps to reduce costs and improve efficiency, but it also brings hidden bundling risks. Therefore, the industry needs to increase spot circulation channels, enhance product turnover rates, and reduce inventory costs. At the same time, we should promote the development of new technologies, develop new products that better meet market demands, thereby increasing the added value and competitiveness of products, and expanding new application fields and international markets.
At the meeting, industry experts focused on in-depth discussions and offered suggestions on the development trends of the BDO industry, the optimization and upgrading of the industrial chain, the development of new application fields, the hotspots of innovation frontiers, and the development potential of downstream derivatives.
Deng Huichang, deputy secretary-general of the Chemical New Materials Committee of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and secretary-general of the National 1, 4-butanediol and Derivatives Working Department, pointed out that since the beginning of this year, the losses in the BDO industry have continued to increase. In this regard, he put forward several suggestions: The BDO industry should actively and vigorously cultivate and expand the downstream product market, strengthen communication and connection with government departments, research institutes and industry associations, and jointly develop and seek new industrial demand points. Increase the export efforts of products such as BDO, γ -butyrolactone (GBL), n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and actively explore the international market.
Enterprises should develop in the directions of high-end electronic chemicals, high-end pharmaceutical chemicals, etc. Deng Huichang pointed out that industry associations should fully play their role in guiding and self-regulating the industry during the process of enterprise transformation, hold the bottom line of enterprise cost prices, enable the BDO industrial chain and NMP enterprises to have upstream and downstream linkage, and promote the healthy and orderly development of enterprises in the industrial chain.
Yu Muhuo, a professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Donghua University and deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Fiber Materials Modification, said that currently, the BDO industry is facing challenges such as the "dual carbon" test and price competition, but this is also a major opportunity for the industry to be reborn. The BDO industry is in a period of growing pains and should focus on researching and exploring new applications.
