High-end chemical new materials call for breakthroughs in domestic production
On April 29th, it was learned from the Innovation and Development Forum of the 2025 Petrochemical Industry Development Conference that China's new chemical materials industry plays an important supporting role in the development of emerging industries such as electronic information, new energy vehicles, and medical services, but the self-sufficiency rate in high-end fields is insufficient. Under the influence of external environments such as the Sino-US trade friction, the petroleum and chemical industry still needs to promote the upgrading of the traditional industrial structure through technological innovation, focus on advancing the localization process of the entire industrial chain, and achieve new breakthroughs in the field of new chemical materials.
Focusing on high-end application fields, many experts attending the conference pointed out that there are still many key materials that urgently need technological innovation and breakthroughs in domestic production, especially in the field of electronic materials and related areas, such as thermal conductive materials and electromagnetic shielding materials used in communication, photoresists and masks used in semiconductors, etc.
For China's electronic materials industry, forming an independent supply chain system will be a long-term goal. Lu Jin, the executive vice secretary-general of the China Electronic Materials Industry Association, said. During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, the huge market scale advantage will be further demonstrated, especially the demand for high-end electronic materials from emerging fields and consumption upgrades, providing a broad space for the sustained and healthy development of the industry. In the future, we will strengthen the drive of big data and AI, build a collaborative innovation ecosystem, further enhance international cooperation, and promote the improvement of international competitiveness of China's electronic materials enterprises.
Meng Xianming, vice president of China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., LTD., said that the major trend of automotive lightweighting has brought development opportunities to non-metallic materials such as carbon fiber composites, glass fibers, plastics, and modified resins. He pointed out that in response to the demands of large-scale and mass-produced automotive applications, materials must be cost-effective, such as reducing raw material costs and developing low-cost forming processes. Innovation in core energy materials will be the key to further promoting breakthroughs in new energy batteries and providing important support for the development of downstream application industries such as automobiles. The transformation of travel methods will bring about changes in car configurations, creating demands for lightweight and intelligent materials. New composite materials need to possess both lightweight and intelligent characteristics. Functional materials should focus on user needs, be empowered by technology, innovate application scenarios, and enhance user experience.
Chemical materials are an important support in the medical field, but the self-sufficiency rate in the high-end sector is relatively low. Zhang Li, deputy chief engineer of the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Planning Institute, said that China has taken a dominant position in the mid-to-low-end medical materials market, but the proportion of imports in the high-end market still exceeds 60%. She hopes that enterprises will increase investment in research and development, promote the in-depth integration of industry, academia, research and application, optimize the layout of the industrial chain, strengthen clinical verification, and improve the performance and quality of domestic materials.
Li Bin, vice president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, reminds that intellectual property rights are an essential need for scientific and technological innovation. He put forward five suggestions to enterprises on this matter: First, fully enhance the understanding of doing a good job in patent work, improve the quality of patents, and do a good job in patent application planning; Second, we should do a good job in the layout of intellectual property rights and strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights at their source. Third, strengthen the construction of the intellectual property risk prevention and control system and mechanism; Fourth, enhance the ability to respond to and diversely resolve intellectual property disputes; The fifth is to enhance the capacity building for responding to international intellectual property disputes.
