National pipeline expert: The pipeline industry is in a window period for strategic transformation

On April 9th, at the opening ceremony of the 8th China International Pipeline Conference, Zhao Shangxin, the general manager of the Science and Technology Department of the National Oil and Gas Pipeline Network Group Co., LTD., stated that currently, the new round of global scientific and technological revolution and energy revolution is unfolding in depth, and the green and low-carbon transformation of energy has become a major strategic direction for global sustainable development and climate change response. The pipeline industry is in a crucial strategic transformation window period and an innovative breakthrough period. It urgently needs to take innovation-driven development as the core, proactively meet challenges, seize opportunities, and achieve a reshaping of the development business model.

 

Zhao Shangxin analyzed the three major situations that China's pipeline industry is facing in terms of technological development.

 

First of all, safety and efficiency are inevitable requirements for achieving high-quality development in the pipeline industry. At present, the construction of the "National Network" is accelerating. The scale of the pipeline system is becoming larger, its structure more complex, it influences each other across domains, and the safety requirements are stricter. The research objects are shifting from pipelines to pipe networks, and the research paradigms are changing from "steel pipelines + fluid mechanics" to "interconnected pipe networks + systems engineering" and "energy platforms + artificial intelligence". It is necessary to rethink and restructure safety and efficiency from the perspective of the pipeline network system.

 

Secondly, the low-carbon transformation is a major opportunity to create a "second curve" for the pipeline industry. Under the background of the "dual carbon" strategy, China is accelerating the adjustment and optimization of its industrial structure and energy structure, and continuously promoting the low-carbon transformation of energy. It is predicted that the annual demand for hydrogen is expected to increase to 100 million tons by 2060, and the potential for carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) will reach 1 billion tons. The flexible storage and transportation of various media such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methanol/liquid ammonia will expand the boundaries of the pipeline network, bringing new development opportunities to the pipeline network and opening up the "second curve" of growth with strategic emerging industries.

 

Secondly, digital intelligence leadership is the inevitable path to promoting the transformation and upgrading of the pipeline industry. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, based on technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, is reshaping the global industrial competition landscape. How to transform it into a powerful engine driving the "intelligent transformation" of energy infrastructure is not only a technical proposition but also an era issue concerning strategic competitiveness and sustainable development capabilities. The pipeline industry needs to drive industry transformation with new technological innovations such as "AI+ pipeline network" to answer the question of The Times: "How can the pipeline industry go further?"

 

Zhao Shangxin introduced that the National Pipeline Network Group has made all-round and systematic plans and advanced the research and development of key core technologies, achieving significant breakthroughs in key core technologies such as design and construction technology and equipment, key pipeline equipment, pipeline ring weld detection technology, large-scale natural gas pipeline network simulation technology, low-carbon and new energy technology. In the future, the National Pipeline Network Group will focus on seven major directions: new materials and efficient construction of pipelines, integrated application of quantum information technology, optimization of natural gas pipeline networks, drag reduction and increased transportation, flexible transportation of multiple media, energy storage in aquifers, and "artificial intelligence + pipeline networks", leading the transformation of the development paradigm of the pipeline industry.
