The first 100,000-ton "Liquid Sunshine" methanol industrial project has started construction
On November 6th, the construction of the pile foundation for the carbon dioxide refining and methanol plant of the 100,000-ton/year "Liquid Sunshine" project of China Coal Ordos Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. began, marking the official start of construction of the first domestic industrial demonstration project with 100% independent intellectual property rights for the full-process "Liquid Sunshine" carbon dioxide and green hydrogen to methanol production.

This project is located in the Tuke Industrial Park, Wushen Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It adopts the "100,000-ton liquid sunlight green methanol technology" with independent intellectual property rights in China, which was jointly developed by China Coal E Energy Chemical Company and the team of Academician Li Can from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It uses electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy for electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. Then, the refined carbon dioxide and green hydrogen from the tail gas emitted by the chemical plant are converted into methanol to achieve large-scale consumption of green electricity and green hydrogen as well as the resource utilization of carbon dioxide.
A responsible person from the Development and Science and Technology Innovation Department of China Coal E Energy Chemical Company told the reporter that the total investment of the project is approximately 4.9 billion yuan. It will build 625MW of wind and solar renewable energy power generation, 21,000 tons per year of electrolytic water production and hydrogen storage, 100,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide plus green hydrogen to produce green methanol (including 150,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide capture and refining), as well as supporting public auxiliary facilities. After its completion and commissioning in October 2026, it is planned to reduce coal consumption by 140,000 tons of standard coal and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 520,000 tons annually compared with coal-to-methanol of the same scale.
This project is an important measure taken by China National Coal Group to actively respond to the national green and low-carbon development strategy, fully build the "Two Joint Ventures +" demonstration base of China National Coal Group, establish the "Two offsets" mechanism, and promote the transformation and upgrading of the energy industry. Through the full-process industrial demonstration of wind and solar power generation, hydrogen production through water electrolysis, and methanol production by adding green hydrogen to carbon dioxide, an industrial solution path will be provided for carbon dioxide reduction and resource utilization in high energy-consuming and high-carbon emission industries.

It is understood that the technology known as "liquid sunlight methanol synthesis", which utilizes renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to decompose water and produce green hydrogen, and then combines green hydrogen with carbon dioxide under the action of a catalyst to synthesize methanol, in order to replace fossil energy and achieve carbon recycling, was developed by the team led by Li Can, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, over a period of 20 years. The overall technology is at the international leading level and has previously completed industrialization verification in Lanzhou New Area. Unlike the traditional coal-to-methanol technology that emits carbon dioxide, this technology utilizes carbon dioxide as a resource to produce methanol, opening up a brand-new path for green methanol.
