China's hydrogen energy industry is still in its early stage of development
On April 28, 2024, the "Hydrogen Energy Industry Science and Technology Innovation Development Forum" of the Zhongguancun Forum was held at the Zhongguancun International Innovation Center. This forum is hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and organized by the Zhongguancun Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Industry Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the Alliance).
Shan Zhongde, a member of the Party Group and vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, emphasized that China's hydrogen energy industry has made considerable progress. A relatively complete industrial chain covering hydrogen production, storage, transportation and application has been basically established, and it is now fully entering a new stage of quality improvement and efficiency enhancement. A number of key materials such as industrial hydrogen storage materials, ion-exchange membranes and electrocatalysts have been developed. A number of major equipment such as 49-ton fuel cell heavy-duty trucks, hydrogen internal combustion engine aircraft, "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1" hydrogen-powered vessels, large-scale electrolytic water hydrogen production electrolyzers, cryogenic liquid hydrogen expectors and storage tanks, and long-distance hydrogen pipelines have been completed, and a number of high-level innovative enterprises have been cultivated and formed. However, the hydrogen energy industry, as a typical future industry, is still in the early stage of industrialization.
Xu Xinchao, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Municipal Government, said that hydrogen energy, as an important carrier for achieving deep clean decarbonization in multiple fields, is a key support for realizing the "dual carbon" goals. The development of the hydrogen energy industry is an important strategic choice for Beijing to address climate change, cultivate new quality productivity, and achieve green and sustainable development. Next, Beijing will promote policy innovation, industrial cultivation, scenario opening and facility construction in the hydrogen energy field in a coordinated manner, actively promote the cross-regional and clustered coordinated development of the hydrogen energy industry, focus on promoting technological progress and large-scale and commercial development of the entire hydrogen energy and fuel cell industry chain, and continuously promote the demonstration application of advanced technology and equipment. Promote multi-level and wide-ranging cooperation in the domestic and international hydrogen energy industry.
This forum has invited Academician Ouyang Minggao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor at Tsinghua University and director of the Expert Committee of the Alliance, Academician Chen Xuedong of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Vice President and Chief engineer of China National Machinery Industry Corporation Limited, and Professor Ming Pingwen, tenured and specially-appointed professor and doctoral supervisor of Tongji University, to deliver keynote speeches.
Academician Ouyang Minggao, drawing on cases of industry-university-research cooperation between Tsinghua University and Yihua Tong, Jutong Technology, the Zhangjiakou Winter Olympics, and the Ordos Zero-Carbon Industrial Park, interpreted issues such as the research and development and industrialization of hydrogen fuel cell systems, technological innovation and industrialization of electrolytic water hydrogen production, and key technologies for hydrogen energy system integration. He also provided prospects for the hydrogen energy technology chain, value chain, and industrial chain.
In his report titled "Opportunities for the Development of China's Hydrogen Energy Industry and Progress in Storage and Transportation Equipment Technology", Academician Chen Xuedong emphasized the significance of hydrogen energy as an important carrier for energy transition and the importance of achieving the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. He also shared the progress made and challenges faced by China in hydrogen energy storage and transportation equipment technology.
Professor Ming Pingwen, through his report titled "Discussion on Technological Innovation and Future Trends of Hydrogen Energy in China", analyzed in detail the current status and problems of technological innovation in each link of hydrogen energy from aspects such as production, storage, transportation and utilization. This provided an important reference for how to better seize the development opportunities of the hydrogen energy industry and also pointed out the direction and strategies for the development of the hydrogen energy industry for policymakers and market participants.
The forum also invited four regional leaders, namely Liang Kailong, a member of the Party Group and deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province, Zhong Weigong, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Daxing District Committee of Beijing and Minister of Organization, Wang Guozhong, Secretary of the Party Group and Director of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, and Bai Jing, a member of the Party Group and Vice Mayor of Zhangjiakou Municipal People's Government. Sharing the rich experiences and specific practical cases of exploring the innovative development of the hydrogen energy industry in various regions of our country, it showcases the remarkable achievements made by our country in promoting the transformation of the energy structure and facilitating green and low-carbon development.
This forum reached a number of cooperation agreements. Beijing Daxing District and Yulin City, Shaanxi Province signed a strategic cooperation agreement on the hydrogen energy industry. Tsinghua University has signed cooperation agreements with Beijing Shougang Co., LTD., State Power Investment Corporation Science and Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. and Shaanxi Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Co., Ltd. respectively. The Zhongguancun Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Industry Alliance signed a cooperation agreement with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce China Innovation Center and the Daxing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone. A cooperation agreement was signed with the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Standardization Center of South Korea and the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Fuel Cells and Flow Batteries on the "International Strategic Cooperation on Standardization of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells".
This forum, adopting an "online + offline" communication mode and leveraging digital communication methods, has attracted extensive attention both within and outside the industry. During the forum, over 300 experts, scholars and enterprise representatives from both domestic and international industries attended the meeting on-site, and the number of online viewers exceeded 30,000.
