On October 17th, two sets of electrified air separation units of Air Liquide Group in Tianjin were put into operation. These two air separation units have been converted from steam-driven to electricity-driven, marking its first "steam-to-electricity" project for air separation units in China.

The "gas-to-electricity" project in Tianjin is a major move by Air Liquide Group in China to modernize its air separation units and reduce its carbon footprint. This project, with an investment of approximately 60 million euros, will convert two air separation units from steam-driven to electrically-driven, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 370,000 tons annually. Purchasing low-carbon energy through power purchase agreements can further reduce carbon emissions.

Against the backdrop of Air Liquide's renewal of its long-term industrial gas supply contract with Wynn Chemical, the "gas-to-electricity" project for two air separation units in Tianjin was announced to be launched in 2023, providing low-carbon gases to customers. In 2023, Air Liquide also signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding with Wynn Chemicals and Tianjin Binhai New Area to explore the implementation of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) solutions.

Air Liquide Group has over 120 factories in China. Tianjin is one of the main business areas of Air Liquide in China. Currently, it owns and operates four air separation plants there, as well as an industrial gas pipeline network connecting the Lingang, Dagang and Nangang industrial parks. In addition, a new hydrogen filling center located in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin is under construction and is expected to be put into operation by the end of this year.
