The fluorosilicon industry is driving high-quality development with two major fulcrums
On May 22nd, the 9th China Fluorosilicone Industry Conference 2025 was held in Baotou City, jointly organized by the China Fluorosilicone Organic Materials Industry Association and Inner Mongolia Jinebo Fluorine Chemical Co., LTD. Reporters learned from the meeting that in 2024, the net profit margins of most of the 21 domestic listed companies in the silicone industry and 32 listed companies in the fluorine chemical industry will decline, and most projects in the two industries will "increase in volume but not in efficiency". Experts attending the meeting stated that it is necessary to take strengthening technological empowerment and promoting the synergy of the production chain as the fulcrum to assist the fluorine-silicon industry in achieving high-end, refined and green transformation.
Zhang Jianjun, honorary chairman of the Fluorine and Silicon Association, said that in 2024, China's fluorine and silicon industry will be under dual pressure from the market and operation. However, macro policies aimed at promoting sustained economic growth and improving the expectations of micro-entities have been further strengthened and taken effect. China's economy continues to recover steadily, which will further promote the high-quality development of the fluorine and silicon industry.
Yang Xiaoyong, honorary chairman and chief engineer of the Fluorosilicon Association, pointed out that although China now has the world's largest and most complete industrial chain system for organosilicon and fluorine chemicals, the industry as a whole is in a state of being large but not strong. In this regard, he emphasized: "From small to large, it relies on investment; from large to strong, it depends on innovation." We must intensify our efforts in innovation and drive technological progress in the industry and promote industrial upgrading through continuous innovation.
Bu Xinping, secretary-general of the Chemical New Materials Specialized Committee of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, also clearly pointed out that in the future, new materials represented by fluorosilicon materials need to develop along the path of "emphasizing research and development, making up for shortcomings, strengthening strengths, improving quality and creating brands", focusing on key technical directions such as new energy materials, engineering plastics and green building materials, strengthening scientific and technological innovation and cultivating new growth points.
At the meeting, Zhou Yuanjian, the secretary-general of the Organosilicon Specialized Committee of the FluoroSilicon Association, and Su Qin, the secretary-general of the Organofluorine Specialized Committee of the FluoroSilicon Association, respectively introduced the development situations of the fluorine and silicon industries in 2024.
Zhou Yuanjian introduced that in 2024, China's functional silane production capacity will reach 729,000 tons, with an output of 277,000 tons, and the consumption will grow at a high speed of 8%. In the future, the silicone industry should strengthen safety, environmental protection and intensive development, integrate and upgrade the industry on a large scale, implement integrated integration of the upstream, midstream and downstream, expand the global market layout, and enhance technological innovation and the development of high value-added products.
Su Qin introduced that the fluorine chemical industry will operate generally stably in 2024. In the future, it should focus on five new development directions: namely, the supporting materials needed for the development of new energy and semiconductor industries, etc. Make up for the shortcomings of domestic substitution and build a safe industrial chain; Guided by market demand, we implement customized services. Adhere to green and sustainable development; Accelerate the integration of the industrial chain and upgrade products towards high-end.
In response to the environmental compliance issues of concern to the fluorosilicon industry, Zhang Yang, a researcher at the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, stated that China has completely phased out 29 substances containing POPs. The next step will be to benchmark against the "Beautiful China" initiative, conduct in-depth screening and assessment of potential high-risk substances for PFAS, and establish a localized limited control list of harmful PFAS by 2027.
At the meeting, the Fluorine and Silicon Association, in collaboration with leading fluorine chemical enterprises, jointly launched the "Fluorine Chemical Responsible Production Initiative", planning to promote industry compliance through measures such as accelerating the elimination of controlled PFAS, strengthening environmental emission control during the production process, and speeding up green substitution, to contribute to the construction of a beautiful China.
The "Annual Report on China's Fluorine Chemical Industry (2025 Edition)" was also released at the meeting. The report provides industrial development information and relatively comprehensive data of significant reference value over the past year, and issues early warnings regarding the capacity development of some bulk fluorine chemical product projects.
